17 March 2021

This is an update on the Board's thinking in respect of the resumption of OTB club chess competitions.
The UK government has set out a roadmap with a view to lifting all COVID related legal restrictions no earlier than 21 June 2021.
That may change to a later date depending on the progress in fighting the pandemic as legal restrictions are gradually eased.
At the time of writing the impact of the first round of restrictions easing is not known.
In light of the above "earliest" date, the uncertainty of whether it will change, that not all adults in the UK will have been offered a vaccine until the end of July, that many people will wish to take long awaited holidays during the summer and that it is likely to be very challenging for chess clubs to reopen during the summer, both financially and due to uncertain venue availability, the Board believes it is best to plan on a resumption of SCCA OTB club chess competitions in September/October 2021.

The Board intends to contact SCCA clubs again, towards the beginning of May, in order to consult with them about the OTB resumption, including how to deal with the suspended 2019-2020 competitions.
The results of that consultation and any decisions arising from it will be on the agenda of the SCCA AGM, which we plan to hold as an online meeting on 20 June 2021.
For clarity, we are NOT asking for any club consultation responses now.
That is for the future. This communication is simply intended to share with clubs the course we intend to take.

John Davis funeral arrangements.
Catherine Cook has advised that her father's funeral will be held at Leatherhead Crematorium at 12.30pm on Wednesday 14 April.
The delay is a reflection of the (COVID) times.
Given the restriction in numbers (30) allowed to attend it may be streamed, but it would be helpful for Catherine Cook to know who would like to attend in person and who would prefer to attend online.
She has said it would be lovely to meet some of my father's chess friends, albeit from a social 2m distance! Those wishing to attend either in person or online should contact Catherine direct via email calcook43@hotmail.com. or preferably by phone on 0780 1074471.
John's family do not want floral tributes but for those who wish to do so a donation to either of the charites shown below.

The SCCA Board has become aware that there is a team named "Surrey Junior" playing chess online.
For clarity, the Board would like to note that Surrey Junior is not run or controlled in any way by the SCCA.
The Board is pleased to note the efforts of the many private organisations providing junior chess in Surrey and wishes them well.

A revised Guidance to Players and Captains in SCCA Events is now available for viewing under the Administration link on the SCCA website.
It replaces the For the combined document 'Role and Duties of Match Captains - SCCA' , and 'Guidance to Players and Captains'.

He will be greatly missed. The funeral arrangements are not yet known.

To SCCA Club Secretaries, Officials and Life Vice Presidents

In these difficult times, the SCCA has been working hard to provide online chess playing opportunities to help fill the gap created by the response to Covid-19.

One way of keeping our chess brains ticking over is to play correspondence chess via email.
So, it is with great pleasure that I'm able to announce a new initiative, which I very much hope you and your club members will want to support.

The SCCA, through our correspondence chess secretary Richard Tillett, is arranging an email match between the Braille Chess Association (BCA) and Surrey.

Richard has drafted an info sheet with further details about the match (attached).
BCA have had some 40 expressions of interest from their members, and we now want to establish how many Surrey players would like to participate
- it would be great if we could attract a similar number!

Please circulate this email and the attachment to your members as soon as possible as we want to get this match up-and-running quickly -
the deadline for responses is Friday 18 December.

Questions about the match and entries should be addressed to Richard Tillett, tillett.richard@gmail.com, 07973 831619.

For your information if there is enough interest Surrey will enter 2 teams and the team captain will be be Julien Shepley (2050 average grade team) and Trevor Jones (1675 average grade team).
Players wishing to take part must be members of the ECF and Lichess will be the platform.
Interested players should contact Peter Lawrence, Administrative Director, SCCA in the first instance.
Please be aware of the information below.

  1. Lichess may ban players that it believes are cheating.
  2. It is not known exactly how the Lichess screening process ban works.
  3. SCCU conditions are that it will not take a view about Lichess bans and so the resolution of appeals will be strictly between the player and Lichess.
  4. SCCA are not in a position to resource any assistance to players in contesting any Lichess bans.
  5. ECF fair play rules include sanctions if players are banned.

Details of the game will be provided under the Best Game Prizes link on the SCCA website.

15 September 2020

Dear SCCA chess participants,
Although there is no immediate prospect of OTB chess restarting in many settings, due to COVID-19, the English Chess Federation ("ECF") has ongoing fixed costs,
including employees, that it cannot simply defray.
The ECF is concerned that membership renewals are likely to be well down on a normal year because of the lack of OTB chess.
The SCCA Board has had some differences of opinion with the ECF in the past, whilst also acknowledging its successes.
However, the much bigger picture is that the ECF, comprised primarily of volunteers who put in a large amount of work, provides significant services to chess in England and it would be missed if it became financially unsustainable.
By now you should have received an invitation to renew your ECF membership.
If you have done so already, great. If not, the Board would like to encourage you, if you are able to financially, to renew in a timely fashion please.

Surrey County Chess Association

10 September 2020
Russell Granat will soon be moving to the South Coast for a well-earned retirement and in consequence has stepped down as Deputy President of the SCCA.

Russell will, however, continue as a director of the Surrey Chess Congress for the time being and hopefully until his replacement in that capacity can be found.
Russell led the resurrection of the full Surrey Chess Congress in 2018 which was the first time it had run in many years.
Russell became a SCCA Non-Executive Director in 2015 and became Deputy President in March 2018. He has given excellent, wise and pragmatic service to the SCCA, his club and chess in general and the SCCA Board wish him a happy retirement.
With immediate effect the Board are pleased to announce that they have filled the resultant vacancy by appointing Alan Scrimgour, currently a Non-Executive Director, as the new SCCA Deputy President. The Board has every confidence in and wishes Alan well in his new role.
In consequence there is now a vacancy for the position of SCCA Non-Executive Director. Applications for the position should be sent to Peter Lawrence, Administrative Director.

04 September 2020
The results for the Surrey players in the Counties & District Correspondence Chess Championships can now be found from the Correspondence Matches link on the Competitions page of the SCCA website.

19 August 2020
The English Chess Federation have called for election nominations ahead of its AGM on 17th October.
Vacancies exist for the roles of Director of Finance, Non-Executive Director and Member of the Governance Committee.
If any Surrey chess participant wishes to put themselves forward for any of those positions or to contest any of the other elections
please inform Paul Shepherd , the SCCA President and ECF Council Delegate,
by 1st September (tv1div1@surbitonchessclub.co.uk).
Kindly note that this deadline reflects the fact that SCCA, on its own, cannot make a nomination but would need to reach an agreement with a supporting county to make a joint nomination if any prospective candidates come forward.

The Board would like record its recognition and thanks to the captains of the county teams for their hard work over the season:

We recognise that managing a large squad takes significant time and effort, particularly in the days before a match, and that it can be difficult to get representative teams, particularly to away venues.
The Open and U140 teams were to be nominated by the SCCU for the national stages before OTB chess was shut down,
and we await further information as to the possibility of playing in due course.

06 April

ECF have launched a consultation on the development of women's chess. The SCCA Board encourages Surrey chess participants to respond to this consultation.
It would be helpful for the ECF to hear from our female participants in particular.
Men alone second-guessing what measures might attract and retain female chess players is unlikely to produce the right answer!
Please follow the link https://www.englishchess.org.uk/development-of-womens-chess-progress-plan/

We suggest responding with your comments in an email to the ECF Director of Women's Chess, Chris Fegan,

If such a need does exist then please contact Peter Lawrence, SCCA Administrative Director by 23 December.

All SCCA affiliated clubs qualify to enter.
This is an idea that was discussed at the SCCA AGM last year and has now been put into action by SCCU.

We hope that your club will take up the opportunity to enter.
There are likely to be limits to the numbers of entries due to venue size and so early birds will more likely get in.

OPEN TEAM-Good win for Surrey at home to Essex!
Surrey Open team captain, Owen Phillips comment.
Surrey hosted Essex. The match opened after some nice words from Russell Granat about our recently departed friend - FM Steve Berry-which was followed by a well observed minutes silence.
Our players were naturally rather subdued but did Steve and Surrey proud winning 11-5.
If we can win away to Sussex on 2nd March we should then win back the SCCU Open Title.
ENJOY YOUR CHESS!

From Richard Tillett, Secretary of Streatham and Brixton Chess Club: It is with great sadness that we report the death last week of our former club secretary Chris Baker at the age of 83. Chris was a lovely man, gentlemanly and cultured with a touch of the 'old school' about him. An actor by profession, he was a rich source of stories from his years spent touring the country in repertory theatre. He was a conscientious, hard-working and affable club secretary from 1993 to 2002, and a regular player in our Surrey and London League teams. Poor health meant that for the last decade of his life he was confined to his care home and unable to play league chess, but he kept in close touch with the club and liked to stay abreast of events in the chess world. His funeral service will take place at 10.15 am on Friday 15 November at the Lambeth Crematorium, Blackshaw Road, SW17 0BY. The family are not asking for flowers, but suggest that any charitable donations be sent to Imperial Cancer Research

Deric was a member of Crystal Palace from shortly after its foundation in 1972 until he moved out of this area some ten years ago. He was Club Champion four times – in 1976, 1977,1983 and 1988. He was also Club Treasurer for many years and also gave sterling service as Secretary of the Croydon League for a considerable period

The Board wish to encourage more support for the Lauder and Stoneleigh Trophy competitions. There are two suggestions, shown below, which could apply to either or both of the competitions
(1) Run the competitions on a handicap basis based on the average grade of each team. The final score would be adjusted based on the difference in the average grading. This system has been used successfully in the Border League and also recently in the ECF Counties Rapidplay competition. This may address the concerns of some clubs that in particular the current grading limit for the Stoneleigh is too high
(2) Allow the option of Fischer Timing when suitable digital clocks are available
Please advise Peter Lawrence, Administrative Director, if you support either of the above proposals or have other ideas on how to address the matter

Clubs are invited to propose nominations to the SCCA Chess Disputes Committee. The purpose of the committee is to hear appeals against a Controller's decision in respect of SCCA competitions. The panel hearing the Dispute will normally consist of five members who are not drawn from clubs involved in the appeal
Appeals are infrequent - currently about one or two a year - but it is important to be able to convene a suitable panel when the need arises. Panel members need to be experienced players
Please advise Mike Adams, Chess Disputes Committee Chairman, by 30 November if there are any members of your club willing to be nominated to the Disputes Committee
