School teams

There are two leagues and events in Surrey that schools teams can enter.

The Briant Poulter Secondary Schools’ League is the largest league of its kind in England with over 200 players.

The Briant Poulter season starts with the Russell Jamboree for Surrey Schools with teams of 8 players. After the first round, teams are split into Major and Minor sections based on first round scores. Matches are played on Friday evenings between teams of 6 players and there are 5 divisions organised by strength to include players ranging from some of the best in the country to those who have only recently learnt to play chess. League matches start at the end of September and the season is completed by Easter. Tables and results can be found here. Please email the organiser for further information.

Champions’ League Chess is a competition for school teams and individuals up to the age 11 in Year 6 organised by Coulsdon Chess Fellowship (CCF). It is supported by schools from Surrey, Kent, Middlesex and Sussex. Qualifying events take place in the afternoons during the Autumn and Spring terms. The finals are held at an all-day event in the Summer term. Email CCF for further details.
