Kingston Chess Club

Kingston Chess Club, formed in 1875, is a place for chess enthusiasts to gather to play competitively or casually. We have the reputation of having some of the most unique characters and absorbing conversationalists to be found in the chess world. So if you want to find out more about chess culture and history then come along

We meet on Monday nights at the splendid Druids Head pub in the Market Square in the centre of Kingston. If there is a match against another club then we play upstairs. Kingston has two teams in the Surrey League and usually two in the Thames Valley league. This gives plenty of opportunities for those who favour serious competitive games

If there is not a match then we often meet downstairs in the front snug for which boards are available from behind the bar. Casual players are welcome at any club evening. We give notice regarding the club nights on our webpage. The chess season is mainly from October to April. During these months we are usually around on a Monday night at the Druids. However if we have an away match then there may not be anybody left at the pub. You would need to check our fixture list. Like most other chess clubs, we no longer open on a regular weekly basis, but we will always be open during a home match

We are not very good at meeting and greeting so you may have to make an effort to introduce yourself to one of the people playing chess. The problem is that each person may be involved in a match. The best thing is to send an email in advance to one of the officials and then to arrive at the pub by 7.30pm

We do not have a junior section in the club because we play in a pub. However, juniors are welcome to play as members of teams because the upstairs room does not serve alcohol. We can provide tuition to those who want to learn chess but this should be by arrangement.
